Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins has said that funding of €40 Million under the Dormant Accounts Action Plan 2018 has been provided nationally to support disadvantaged organisations.

Senator Hopkins stated, “The Dormant Accounts Fund is used to assist those most in need in our communities. Communities across Roscommon and Galway will be eligible for a portion of this national funding in the coming months.”

“The Dormant Accounts Fund is used to support organisations and initiatives such as the Civil Defence, Seniors Alert Scheme, Community Sports Hubs and Dementia Resource Centres. This fund is resourced by the unclaimed accounts and life assurance policies in financial institutions and insurance undertakings around the country.”

Senator Hopkins continued, “The funding is provided to each lead Government Department who will then support the various initiatives within their remit. This funding will be used to cover costs like machinery, specialised equipment, refurbishment costs and vehicles, as well as capacity building costs in our local social enterprises.

“It is important that we target support for rural communities with the greatest need. This is what Dormant Accounts funding is all about, this support for communities is very positive and will help them to deliver a meaningful impact locally.”

Senator Hopkins concluded, “This Action Plan sets out a roadmap for Dormants Account funding for the coming years. I am confident that the measures included will have a real impact on communities across Roscommon and Galway in the months and years ahead and I will continue to work with many groups locally to ensure we can secure the greatest possible benefit for our local communities.”
