A resolution has been found to deal with issues in relation to insurance at St. Teresa’s Special School in Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, Senator Maura Hopkins said.
“The Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh T.D. has informed me that the Department has agreed to provide €23,000 to St. Teresa’s Special School as an exceptional measure in order to deal with the significant insurance bill.”
“I have worked very closely with Minister McHugh and his officials, along with the school principal and Board of Management in order to secure this positive resolution for pupils, parents and staff of St. Teresa’s Special School.”
“I secured a meeting involving the School Principal and Chair of the Board of Management with Department of Education and Skills officials which took place last Tuesday in Athlone. Following this meeting, both Minister Joe McHugh and Department officials worked on this issue as a matter of urgency in order to support the school.”
“This short term measure is very positive. However, it is necessary to put in place a long term solution for St. Teresa’s Special School and other special schools in similar circumstances across the country. This could include the establishment of a group insurance scheme for all of these schools. This process should involve the National Association of Boards of Management in Special Education (NABMSE) along with the Department of Education and Skills.”
Senator Hopkins concluded, “I also have been informed by Minister McHugh that there are active discussions in relation to the new site for the school. I will continue to work closely with the Minister on both issues in order to ensure we achieve a positive outcome.”
