A meeting took place yesterday (5th June) in Merlin Park between Minister Jim Daly, HSE Management, Dept of Health Official and myself in relation to the Rosalie Unit and future plans. I have been actively seeking this meeting for a number of weeks and I have been working closely with Minister Jim Daly on this issue.
I emphasised again concerns raised with me regarding communication and proper engagement with residents and family members. HSE Management informed the meeting they will work with residents and their families. I communicated strongly the fact that individual details of Dr. Anderson’s report need to be shared with the individuals and their families.
HSE management informed those present at this meeting that work is being progressed on a proposal to change the current use of the Rosalie Unit. The proposal is to develop a Mental Health Hub at the Rosalie Unit which would include two Day Hospitals, one serving Children and Adolescents and one serving the Elderly. HSE Management stated that additional staff will be required for both Day Hospitals to provide these additional services for the people of this area.
The Day Hospital Proposal for Children and Adolescents would operate on a seven-day week basis. It would serve Roscommon, Mayo and parts of Sligo and Leitrim. The service would provide individual care to young people to reduce the need for admission to A & E and facilitate earlier discharge from the Inpatient Unit in Galway. The health care professionals delivering this service would be Medical, Nursing, Social Work, Psychology, Occupational Therapy.
The Day Hospital Proposal for Older People is to develop a Psychiatry of Later Life Day Hospital which would operate 5 days per week. This would serve people from Roscommon and North Galway. There is also a proposal to develop a memory clinic for early diagnosis and management of Dementia. The healthcare professionals delivering the service would be Medical, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Social Work and Psychology services.
HSE Management informed the meeting that the next step in this process will be for Community Healthcare West to cost the proposal and submit it for funding via the Estimate Process.
