Senator Maura Hopkins has demanded progress on the planned replacement 50 bed ward block unit at Portiuncula University Hospital.
Senator Hopkins stated, “It is essential that we see works progressing on this project without delay. I have again met with Minister for Health, Simon Harris T.D. on this issue today (June 20th).”
Raising the matter in the Seanad in recent days, she stated, “The current ward block is simply not fit for purpose and this project is extremely important to improve conditions for patients and staff at the hospital. As a healthcare professional myself, I have emphasised this point to both Minister Harris and the Taoiseach on numerous occasions.”
“I recently met with hospital management on this issue and they further highlighted the urgent need for this project. I first raised the need for this project with then Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar T.D. in 2015. Since then, I have been making the case for this investment within Government. I have discussed the issue with management on many occasions since my election to the Seanad in 2016. I have been consistently raising this matter at the highest levels in Government, as this project is key to improving conditions for patients and staff at Portiuncula Hospital.”
Senator Hopkins continued, “The HSE previously informed me that tender documents were being prepared, with a view to progressing procurement and commencing an enabling works contract in 2019. However, I have not seen evidence of this work to date.”
“I have been informed that the HSE Capital Plan is in the final stages of preparation at present. I have made it very clear to Minister Harris that this project must be included in the Capital Plan.”
Senator Hopkins concluded, “I will be continuing to work closely with hospital management and Minister Harris in order to ensure that we secure this vital investment at Portiuncula Hospital.”
