€53,952 is to be provided to community groups across Roscommon and Galway under the Peatlands Community Initiative, Senator Maura Hopkins has said.

Senator Hopkins stated, “My colleague, Minister for Culture, Heritage and Gaeltacht, Josepha Madigan T.D. has informed me that she is making funding available to the following groups:

Cloonsellan Abbey Conservation Group- €11,252- enhancements to the Clooncraff bog road including interpretive signage.

Kilteevan Tidy Towns- €20,000- installation of a new board walk.

Mount Allen Residents- €7,700- the completion of restoration works and the installation of water monitors.

Glenamaddy Tidy Towns- €15,000- upgrade walking trails at Frass Clooncon bog.”

“This funding will provide a very positive boost for these communities who are working to preserve and enhance the natural environment around them.”

“These projects, once completed have the potential to become a major driver of tourism in this region as part of Irelands Hidden Heartlands, the Fáilte Ireland led tourism initiative. We know that raised bogs are a unique feature in the landscape across this region.”

Senator Hopkins concluded, “I want to commend each of these groups for the great work they are doing in their communities. As Seanad Spokesperson for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, I continue to work closely with Minister Madigan to deliver for our region.”
