Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins has again this week met with her colleague, Minister for Health, Simon Harris T.D. in order to ensure the new 50 bed unit at Portiuncula Hospital is given the highest priority.

Senator Hopkins stated, “I am very pleased to have secured funding for Portiuncula in the new HSE Capital Plan 2019-2021. This is a project which I have been working on for many years and it is crucial that we see a timely commencement of works.”

“These works will include the construction of a replacement 50 bed ward block, fire safety works and a lift replacement programme. We know that this is a shovel ready project with all necessary permissions in place. It is essential now that we see works commence as soon as possible.”

“That is why I have met with Minister Harris again this week in order to ensure we do not see any delays in moving to construction. I have asked him to provide me with a clear timeline to see this project through to completion.”

“We know that this project is so important to improve facilities for patients and staff in the hospital. The current facilities are outdated for what is required in a modern hospital setting.”

Senator Hopkins concluded, “I have again emphasised the importance of this project to Minister Harris and will continue to work closely with him to ensure that we can deliver these much improved facilities for Ballinasloe and the wider region.”
