Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins has stated that it is very positive that local agricultural shows are to receive a grant of €5,000 each to support their work.

Senator Hopkins stated, “My Colleague, Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring TD has informed me that he is providing €600,000 to each of the 120 agricultural shows affiliated to the Irish Shows Association.”

“Local agricultural shows to receive funding of €5,000 include Castlerea, Elphin, Strokestown, Roscommon, Glenamaddy, Mountbellew and Ballinasloe. These agricultural shows represent the best of our rural communities and showcase all that rural Ireland has to offer.”

“They rely entirely on volunteer work in order to ensure they can run successfully and I know that falling numbers of volunteers and weather difficulties have placed pressure on these shows over the past number of years. I am happy to see that this funding is being made available to support them in terms of advertising expenses, printing, ambulance and first aid support, trophies and judges costs.”

Senator Hopkins concluded, “Local agricultural shows are the highlight of the calendar year for many rural communities, it is incredibly important that we support them to the greatest extent possible in order to ensure we can sustain our rural communities into the future.”
